BWIH Conference 2023

I was privileged to attend the Black Women In Health Conference in Liverpool 14th October 2023.

It was an opportunity to network with highly talented individuals and learn from their experiences. I was particularly touched by a speaker who shared a story of loss and how she was able to rise from that to become a pillar of support to other individuals.

It reminds me of a speech I heard by Dr Tal Ben-Shahar, Harvard professor and author of Happier. He talks about antifragility or resilience 2.0. According to his explanation, resilience 1.0 is the ability for a substance to return to its original state after experiencing some stress or pressure. Resilience 2.0 takes it a step further - the material grows stronger as a result of the stress applied to it. For resilience 1.0, he gives the example of a ball bouncing back to the height it was dropped from. In resilience 2.0, the ball bounces back higher. Another example of resilience 2.0 is the growth experienced by our muscles as a result of the hard work and pressures experienced in the gym. Just as there are physical antifragility systems, there are psychological ones. He refers to this as post traumatic growth. Most of us are familiar with post traumatic stress disorder PTSD and are not even aware of PTG as a concept. Dr Ben-Shahar posits that just an awareness of the potential for PTG makes it more likely that we will lean towards antifragility.

In our conference, I was able to learn about creating generational wealth and multiple streams of income. If you follow me on Instagram, you would have seen some of my posts.

Do come next year, and say hello!
